In prosthetic joint surgery, Ag coating of implant areas in direct contact with bone has been met with hesitation for fear of compromising osseointegration. The physicochemical, antibacterial and osteoconductive properties of three different Ti samples were studied: Ti6Al4V alloy that was grit-blasted (GB), Ti6Al4V alloy with an experimental Ti-Ag-nitride layer (SN) applied by physical vapour deposition (PVD) and commercially available PVD-coated Ti6Al4V alloy with a base Ag layer and a surface Ti-Ag-nitride layer (SSN, clinically known as PorAg®). Ag content on the surface of experimental SN and SSN discs was 27.7 %wt and 68.5 % wt, respectively. At 28 d, Ag release was 4 ppm from SN and 26.9 ppm from SSN substrates. Colonisation of discs by Staphylococcus aureus was the highest on GB [944 (± 91) × 10 4 CFU/mL], distinctly lower on experimental SN discs [414 (± 117) × 104 CFU/mL] and the lowest on SSN discs [307 (± 126) × 10 4 CFU/mL]. Primary human osteoblasts were abundant 28 d after seeding on GB discs but their adhesion and differentiation, measured by alkaline-phosphatase production, was suppressed by 73 % on SN and by 96 % on SSN discs, in comparison to GB discs. Thus, the PVD-applied Ag coatings differed considerably in their antibacterial effects and osteoconductivity. The experimental SN coating had similar antibacterial effects to the commercially available SSN coating while providing slightly improved osteoconductivity. Balancing the Ag content of Ti implants will be vital for future developments of implants designed for cementless fixation into bone.

Fish migrate across considerable distances and exhibit remarkable agility to avoid predators and feed. Fish swimming performance and maneuverability remain unparalleled when compared to robotic systems, partly because previous work has focused on robots and flapping foil systems that are either big and complex, or tethered to external actuators and power sources. By contrast, we present a robot-the Finbot-that combines high degrees of autonomy, maneuverability, and biomimicry with miniature size (160 cm3). Thus, it is well-suited for controlled three-dimensional experiments on fish swimming in confined laboratory test beds. Finbot uses four independently controllable fins and sensory feedback for precise closed-loop underwater locomotion. Different caudal fins can be attached magnetically to reconfigure Finbot for swimming at top speed (122 mm s-1≡ 1 BL s-1) or minimal cost of transport (CoT = 8.2) at Strouhal numbers as low as 0.53. We conducted more than 150 experiments with 12 different caudal fins to measure three key characteristics of swimming fish: (i) linear speed-frequency relationships, (ii) U-shaped CoT, and (iii) reverse Kármán wakes (visualized with particle image velocimetry). More fish-like wakes appeared where the CoT was low. By replicating autonomous multi-fin fish-like swimming, Finbot narrows the gap between fish and fish-like robots and can address open questions in aquatic locomotion, such as optimized propulsion for new fish robots, or the hydrodynamic principles governing the energy savings in fish schools.

OBJECTIVES: To document hepatitis C virus (HCV) intrafamilial transmission and assess its relative importance in comparison to other current modes of transmission in the country with the largest HCV epidemic in the world. HCV intrafamilial transmission was defined as HCV transmission among relatives living in the same household. DESIGN: Case-control study. Cases were adult patients with acute hepatitis C diagnosed in two 'fever hospitals' of Cairo. Controls were adult patients with acute hepatitis A diagnosed in the same two hospitals, and family members of cases. All consenting household members of cases provided blood for HCV serological and RNA testing. Homology of viral sequences (NS5b region) within households was used to ascertain HCV intrafamilial transmission. Exposures at risk for HCV during the 1-6 months previous to onset of symptoms were assessed in all cases and controls. RESULTS: From April 2002 to June 2007, 100 cases with acute hepatitis C, and 678 controls (416 household members and 262 patients with acute hepatitis A) were recruited in the study. Factors independently associated with HCV infection and their attributable fractions (AFs) were the following: having had a catheter (OR=5.0, 95% CI=1.4 to 17.8; AF=6.7%), an intravenous perfusion (OR=5.8, 95% CI=2.5 to 13.3; AF=20.1%), stitches (OR=2.0, 95% CI=1.3 to 6.6; AF=10.7%), gum treatment (OR=3.7, 95% CI=1.1 to 11.9; AF=3.8%) and being illiterate (OR=2.4, 95% CI=1.4 to 4.4). Of the 100 cases, 18 had viraemic HCV-infected household members. Three long-married (>15 years) couples were infected with virtually identical sequences and none of the three index patients reported any exposure at risk, suggesting HCV intra-familial transmission. CONCLUSION: While three new HCV infections out of 100 could be linked to intra-familial transmission, parenteral iatrogenic transmission (dental care included) was accountable for 34.6% of these new infections. Thus, the relative contribution of intrafamilial transmission to HCV spread seems to be limited.

It has been shown (N. R. Gupta, A. Nadim, H. Haj-Hariri, and A. Borhan, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 218, 338 1999) that a circular drop translating in a Hele-Shaw cell under the action of gravity is linearly stable for nonzero interfacial tension. In this paper, we use the boundary integral method to examine the nonlinear evolution of the shape of initially noncircular drops translating in a Hele-Shaw cell. For prolate initial deformations, it is found that the drop reverts to a circular shape for all finite Bond numbers considered. Initially oblate drops, on the other hand, are found to become unstable and break up if the initial shape perturbation is of sufficiently large magnitude. The critical conditions for the onset of drop breakup are examined in terms of the magnitude of the initial deformation as a function of Bond number. Two branches of marginal stability are identified and the effects of viscosity ratio and asymmetric initial perturbations on the stability diagram are discussed. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

RESUMO

For the buoyancy-driven motion of a drop in a Hele-Shaw cell, a circle is an exact solution for the shape of the drop. The stability of the shape of a circular drop translating in a Hele-Shaw cell under the action of gravity is investigated. It is shown that for nonzero interfacial tension, the circular shape is linearly stable. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.
